‘Die in’ protesters right to keep kids at forefront

- Pat Eland, Delray Beach Helene Askinazi, Lake Worth

This is for all the people who were shopping at Publix in Coral Springs and shouting “Trump!” and “NRA!”: Have all of you lost your minds? Where is your dignity? Do you somehow not fully comprehend just how serious this situation is? Really?

I commend wholeheartedly what student David Hogg is doing and what he has already done. Somebody has to take charge since the “adults” in question are not able to. We cannot forget about these kids. We must do whatever it takes to make it right. Publix will hopefully do the right thing.

I pray your family doesn’t have to experience anything like the Marjory Stoneman Douglas tragedy. USA — kids first! gun control issue.

To those who chanted “Trump, Trump, Trump!” at the participants, I’d like to suggest they open their minds to the true nature of these organized protests. Firstly, no one wants to take away your Second Amendment rights. Secondly, the NRA represents a minuscule number of citizens in this country but exerts a maximum amount of pressure on our politicians and populace through misleading, vitriolic, and chest-pounding speech, not to mention the millions of dollars lining the pockets of those who do their bidding.

Most importantly, we are talking about young people who created this protest because their friends and classmates died, their neighbors lost their beloved children, and the community, and all of us, lost dedicated teachers.

To denigrate their efforts by raising up the name Trump is to devalue human life. Trump claims to be a pro-life president. A commonsense fix of our gun laws would certainly prove that.

Gun control should not be a partisan issue, but it has always been and continues to be such. Time for a change. As an actor in the protests for women’s and civil rights during the 1960s, I applaud the efforts of the Parkland students to rally their peers to effect change. It is a slow go but perseverance eventually pays off.
