ON THE MOUND Marlins LHP Wei-Yin Chen (1-2, 5.22 ERA, 1.398 WHIP) vs. Padres RHP Jordan Lyles (1-1, 3.83 ERA, 1.157 WHIP): Chen will look to build on his longest start as a Marlin, when he went 7 1/3 innings against the Nationals on Saturday afternoon. Chen’s lone blemish was a solo home run to the last batter he faced, thwarting an otherwise magnificent outing for the 32-year-old left-hander. Since the Cubs shelled Chen for nine runs on May 9, he has progressively gotten better, lowering his overall ERA after each of the past three starts. In his last 17 innings, Chen has a 1.59 ERA to go with 17 strikeouts and six walks. Six current Padres have faced Chen before and they own a collective .371/.405/.557 slash line against him, led by Eric Hosmer’s two home runs. … Since 2016, Lyles was mostly a reliever, but the Padres shifted him into the rotation earlier this month with varying success. In his first two starts, he allowed one earned run in 12 1/3 total innings (0.73 ERA). In his last two starts, he allowed nine earned runs in 10 1/3 innings (7.84).
