Oh, baby! What a day

Deputy reunites with boy he helped deliver at roadside.

Baby Charlie is no problem child, but he’s already crossed paths with law enforcement at least three times and he’s only one week old.

The first encounter was when Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Deputy James Breslin helped deliver the infant on the roadside in the family’s SUV. Their latest reunion happened at the sheriff’s headquarters near West Palm Beach on Friday morning.

Charlie’s introduction to the world began when a black Volkswagen Tiguan pulled next to Breslin’s patrol car during a rain shower at Military Trail and Donald Ross Road about 5:22 p.m. on May 25.

“The driver has the window down and he has a look on his face like somebody help me please,” Breslin explained in a video the sheriff’s office posted on YouTube. “I roll my window down and he says, ‘My wife is giving birth and the baby’s head is sticking out.’ ”

The dashboard video camera in Breslin’s patrol car shows him switching lanes and parking behind the SUV before getting out and helping the father deliver the baby.

“I went up to the husband and told him EMS was coming,” Breslin said. “I looked at the wife and she was in the throes of giving birth.”

A 911 operator was on the phone with the father

giving delivery instructions.

“The baby came out, shot out,” Breslin said. “I caught the baby’s head and shoulders… and the dad grabbed his legs.”

The deputy and baby met up at the hospital later that day, and again at the home of parents Jack and Ghita, before Friday’s reunion at the sheriff’s office.

That’s where Breslin got to cradle Baby Charlie as his beaming mother credited the deputy for soothing her nerves during the quick delivery. She said she knew everything would be all right when she saw him in uniform next to her husband that day.

“I just feel so lucky to have been a part of this because I’ve never had such a role in such an amazing event,” Breslin said.
