CORAL GABLES — After a quiet first two days, a handful of Hurricanes heard their names called Wednesday during the third day of the MLB draft.

Pitcher Frankie Bartow became the first Miami player to come off the board, going in the 11th round to the Washington Nationals, who selected him with the 341st pick in the draft.

Bartow, a junior right-handed reliever, appeared in 23 games for the Hurricanes this season and posted a 5-0 record with a 3.12 ERA. He also had four saves and his 32 strikeouts led the Miami bullpen.

Not long after his selection, two more Hurricanes were drafted, both in the 18th round with third baseman Romy Gonzalez going No. 528 to the Chicago White Sox and pitcher Andrew Cabezas going No. 544 to the Minnesota Twins.

Gonzalez was one of the Hurricanes’ most consistent offensive players this year, hitting .273 with a team-high 30 RBI and 35 runs. He also led Miami with 22 stolen bases and his four home runs were second on the team.

Cabezas opened the year in Miami’s bullpen but eventually worked his way into the starting rotation. The right-handed pitcher out of Coral Gables High appeared in 19 games, starting 10. He posted a 3.96 ERA and went 6-4. His 79 strikeouts ranked second among Hurricanes pitchers.

Danny Reyes, a Florida transfer who missed half the season with a thumb injury, was the next Hurricane taken, going in the 28th round to the Detroit Tigers with the

825th pick in the draft.

Even with his injuryshortened season, Reyes proved to be one of the more potent bats in the Hurricanes lineup, hitting .321 with a team-high five home runs. He also had nine doubles, 19 RBI and 18 runs scored.

The Tigers took another Hurricane later in the draft, selecting pitcher Jeb Bargfeldt in the 29th round with the 855th pick.

Bargfeldt, one of Miami’s captains this season, was 4-5 in 2018 with a 3.38 ERA. He struck out 76 and pitched a team-high 101.1 innings. He also had two complete games, including a two-hit shutout against Boston College last month that earned him ACC Pitcher of the Week honors during Miami’s late-season postseason push.

Reliever Michael Mediavilla became the sixth player taken Wednesday, going in the 34th round to the Milwaukee Brewers. Mediavilla struggled at times this season, going 0-3 with a 7.52 ERA in 16 appearances.

The Hurricanes finished the year 28-26.
