Derrick Jones Jr. sprains his ankle in a summer league loss by the Heat.

LAS VEGAS — Sometimes it’s about the sights at summer league as much as the games themselves.

For the Miami Heat there were plenty of them Sunday at Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Of primary concern was summer standout Derrick Jones Jr. turning his right ankle and being assisted off the court in the first quarter of the 94-90 loss to a similar group of rookies, free agents and young players from the Charlotte Hornets.

That incident came directly in front of Heat President Pat Riley, who was engaged in a conversion at the time with Oklahoma City Thunder General Manager Sam Presti, as in take-myCarmelo-please Sam Presti.

All the while, Heat swingman Rodney McGruder looked on from the bench, this time in a Tyler Johnson jersey a day after showing up to the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League in a James Johnson jersey. “I got Tim Hardaway’s next,” he quipped. Teammates Kelly Olynyk and Josh Richardson also were in attendance.

The smiles, though, were limited, after Jones was lost for the game — and possibly the balance of summer league — late in the first quarter with a sprained right ankle. That was after he again took flight for a series of dunks, with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting and two rebounds in his 7:30 of action.

“I just went up to go block the shot and came down on it,” he said. “It’s an ankle sprain, so it’s more than pain. But it’s not something that I can’t tolerate.

“I’ll go get some treatment and whatever the trainers tell me to do, that’s what I’m going to do.”

He remained upbeat afterward.

“I’m not disappointed,” he said. “Ankle sprains happen. It’s the game of basketball. So you’ve got to do what you can do.”

Video coordinator Eric Glass, who is coaching the Heat during summer league, said he will wait for today’s update.

“It’s tough, obviously,” he said. “I didn’t even see the play, so I don’t really know what happened, but he was on his way to a game. So it’s sort of disappointing, so we’ll see how he is [Monday].”

Jones’ injury at least comes with the security of a $1.5 million guarantee for the coming season, part of the two-year deal he agreed to at the July 1 start of NBA free agency.

“D.J. creates so many more impactful players than anybody else on the court, on both sides of the floor and just uplifts everybody, his energy, his spirit,” Glass said. “He just gets some excitement in the gym and then everybody feeds off of it.”

As it was, the Heat already were shorthanded, with the decision to give Bam Adebayo the day off after he had participated in the Heat’s first four summer-league outings.

That left point guard Derrick Walton Jr. as the lone player from this past season available for the balance of Sunday’s game.

Riley watched the game alongside Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and team executives Andy Elisburg and Adam Simon. The conversion with Presti sparked interest amid reports of the Thunder seeking avenues to shed the contract of forward Carmelo Anthony.

The Heat again started undrafted Michigan forward Duncan Robinson, making him the lone player to start each of the Heat’s summer-league games. He again stepped up with his 3-point stroke, closing 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.

The Heat are idle Monday before a 4:30 p.m. Eastern game Tuesday against the Utah Jazz at the Thomas & Mack Center.
