CORAL GABLES – With a scrimmage looming this weekend, the Hurricanes are continuing to move forward after losing their veteran tight end, while a defensive leader is nursing what coach described as a minor injury. Linebacker

a two-year starter for the Hurricanes, was spotted working with members of Miami’s training staff during the media viewing portion of Thursday’s practice.

According to Richt, Pinckney, a former freshman All-American who last season was third on the team with 68 tackles, was held out of the rest of the workout and spent time on Wednesday in a protective boot after tweaking his ankle.

“He just tweaked his ankle and we put it in a boot just for compression and to not let it swell,” Richt said. “We decided to keep him out [Thursday], [there’s] no practice [Friday]. We hope he’ll scrimmage.”

While Miami’s linebackers started the day without one of their veterans, the Hurricanes tight ends group continued pushing forward without tight end

who had knee surgery Wednesday and is expected to miss four months.

Irvin late Wednesday posted a message on Twitter thanking Miami fans for

Michael Parrott Michael Irvin II,

their support after news of his injury was made public earlier in the day.

“Thank you for all of your support and encouragement,” he wrote. “Thanks to [Hurricanes team physician Dr. my surgery went great!! And I’m ready to get to work.”

With the former St. Thomas Aquinas standout sidelined, sophomore

was seen taking the No. 1 tight end reps during Thursday’s media viewing portion, with freshmen and

trading reps at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.

None of the three has caught a pass in a college game, with Polendey mostly seeing special teams action last season and Jordan and Mallory arriving on campus mere weeks ago.

Some other notes from Thursday’s practice on Greentree:

Miami’s quarterback rotation remains unchanged, as one might expect. Redshirt senior who was named the starter heading into camp,

Rosier, Brian Malik

was leading QB drills, with redshirt freshman

behind him, redshirt freshman at No. 3 and freshman

at the No. 4 spot. On Thursday, Richt indicated Weldon — who missed time in the spring while dealing with an eye infection — had a solid start to camp, though he had some struggles Thursday.

“Cade has really had a very good camp. [Thursday], he did a couple of things that weren’t like him in regards to how he has been practicing the first four or five days. He has practiced really [well],” Richt said.

The Hurricanes are scheduled to have a day off today ahead of their first scrimmage of camp on Saturday.

Richt said the format will feature Miami’s first offense against the second defense and the second offense against the first defense.
