CORAL GABLES — Every expectation entering the season is that Jaquan Johnson — one of Miami’s defensive leaders in 2017 — is poised to be one of the Hurricanes’ top performers this year.

The senior safety already has been named a preseason All-ACC selection and has earned spots on the watch lists for several major college football awards, including the Thorpe and Bednarik Awards, as well as the Nagurski Trophy, which is given annually to the nation’s top defensive player.

Now Johnson has earned preseason All-American honors from both the Associated Press and ESPN.

The safety had a team-high 96 tackles last season and was tied with teammate Michael Jackson for the team lead with four interceptions. He was the lone Hurricane to earn a spot on either team, though the ACC was well represented on both.

Appearing on both AP and ESPN teams were Clemson defensive end Clelin Ferrell and defensive tackle Christian Wilkins. Also earning a spot on the AP team was Clemson offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt, while FSU cornerback Levonta Taylor was on ESPN’s team.

Meanwhile, two players with Broward County ties — Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa and Michigan linebacker Devin Bush Jr. — earned recognition from both AP and ESPN.

Bosa was a standout at Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas, while Bush starred at Flanagan High in Pembroke Pines.

Bandy still missing time

Hurricanes cornerback Trajan

Bandy, who on Monday was seen doing conditioning work during practice, was not on the field Tuesday during the media viewing portion of practice.

Working in Bandy’s place with the first-team defense again was senior Jhavonte Dean, who had a pair of interceptions in Miami’s scrimmage on Saturday and has earned praise from coaches for his play in camp.

Hurricanes coach Mark Richt did not speak with reporters Tuesday and traditionally, assistant coaches have deferred to him on injury questions.

Later Tuesday, UM said Bandy’s status was “day-to-day,” though there were no specifics given on the nature of his potential injury.

Jackson again with third unit

Defensive end Joe Jackson, one of the Hurricanes’ top defensive linemen, was again sporting a brace on his left arm and working with the third-string defense during media viewing on Tuesday.

Hurricanes defensive coordinator Manny Diaz said on Monday the brace Jackson has been sporting was a “protective” measure.

The junior, who is already generating buzz as a potential firstround pick in next year’s NFL draft, led all of UM’s defensive linemen with 59 tackles last season. He also had 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

Wilder out

Sophomore linebacker De’Andre Wilder, who has not been at practice in recent days, is undergoing evaluation by the Miami medical staff, the school announced on Tuesday.

This past weekend, images of Wilder wearing an neck brace during UM’s picture day were posted on social media. Miami has not specified the nature of his injury or given a timetable on a potential return.

’Canes go inside

The Hurricanes opened practice Tuesday inside the Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility, which was opened last week.

Miami held its first practice in the new building Friday and Richt said that while most practices will remain outside on the fields at Greentree, the indoor facility will occasionally be used to give players a respite from the heat.

Tuesday marked the 14th practice of the season for the Hurricanes, who are scheduled to scrimmage Wednesday for the last time ahead of their Sept. 2 season opener against LSU.
