Suspensions for fight handed out
Two players — one from American Heritage and one from University School — were suspended for three weeks each after the preseason game between the two Broward County high school football teams on Friday night.
Although the FHSAA redacted player names in the report, senior University School safety Josh Sanguinetti, a four-star recruit, and junior Heritage cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. were ejected on Friday. University School coach Daniel Luque confirmed Sanguinetti was his suspended player.
“With 3:51 remaining in the 3rd period, after the play was over, [players] were pushing and shoving, then punched each other,” the official filing a report form the game wrote to the FHSAA.
Porter and Sanguinetti threw one punch each at one another after a play concluded in the third quarter near the Sharks sideline before the ejections. Sanguinetti was on offense playing wide receiver and blocking Porter on a run play.
A Florida High School Athletic Association spokesperson told the the Sun Sentinel that getting into a fistfight warrants a a six-week suspension. However, throwing one punch is a three-week suspension. The suspensions can be appealed, although Luque said University School will not appeal for Sanguinetti.
“That’s what he gets,” he said. “Lucky for us it’s not six weeks. Teachable moment.”
American Heritage won the kickoff classic exhibition 48-24.
ESPN ranks Sanguinetti, at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, the nation’s third-best safety prospect in the 2019 class. He was a first-team AllCounty selection last season as a junior.
With the Sharks having a Week 2 bye, Sanguinetti will only end up missing two games — the opener at home against Region 4-4A foe Glades Central and a Sept. 7 meeting at Everglades Prep in Homestead.
The Patriots would be without Porter against Miami Carol City for Week 1, New Jersey’s St. Joseph Regional in Week 2, and finally, Miramar on Sept. 7.
