Backup probably won’t play Saturday

DAVIE — Miami Dolphins backup quarterback Bryce Petty was held out of Thursday’s practice because of an oblique injury that might keep him from participating in Saturday’s preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Petty probably wouldn’t have played much anyway because Ryan Tannehill and the first-team offense are expected to play into the third quarter of Saturday’s third preseason game, which serves as a dress rehearsal for the regular season.

David Fales and Brock Osweiler will be used to finish out the game with the second- and third-team offense, continuing their battle to determine who serves as Tannehill’s backup.

Petty, who the Dolphins claimed from the New York Jets off the waiver wire this summer, has worked exclusively with the third-team offense. During the preseason, he’s completed 9-of-13 passes for 111 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception in Miami’s 26-24 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Also held out of Thursday’s practice was receiver Leonte Carroo, a thirdround pick in 2016. Carroo is nursing a groin strain.

“He felt something [Wednesday]. It’s going to be a couple days,” said coach Adam Gase, who said Carroo won’t play against the Ravens.

Carroo, who is a long shot to remain on Miami’s 53-man roster because he’s not one of Miami’s top six receivers, has caught one pass for 5 yards during the preseason….

Tight end MarQuies Gray practiced for a third straight day, but he hasn’t exited the NFL’s concussion protocol program. An independent doctor must clear Gray, the Dolphins’ starting tight end, before he can participate in a game. It is possible that will be done by kickoff on Saturday….

Rookie tailback Kalen Ballage, who is also in the concussion protocol, practiced for the first time on Thursday, but his work was limited.
