Umbrella Sky project selling parasols to public

- By Johnny Diaz South Florida Sun Sentinel

Fans of the colorful umbrellas that have bathed Giralda Plaza in Coral Gables in rainbow hues can now take home one of the parasols.

The candy-colored umbrellas, which are part of a traveling art installation called the Umbrella Sky project, will be coming down Monday. But people can adopt an umbrella for $25.

The Coral Gables Community Foundation is pre-selling the umbrellas, which will come with an authenticity stamp.

Proceeds from the umbrella sales will go to the Community Arts Endowment fund for future public art projects. People who purchase an umbrella will need to pick it up from the foundation’s office at 220 Alhambra Circle, Suite 320 in Coral Gables. For more information on how to grab one of the umbrellas, visit gablesfoundation.org/UmbrellaSky.

More than 1 million people have been dazzled by the art installation since it was unveiled July 13 in the 100 block of Giralda Avenue. During their time there, the umbrellas have become a must-see and a must-stop for tourists and locals who were often seen huddling for selfies under the 720 umbrellas. The parasols created a colorful canopy along the renovated plaza.

The project comes from Sexatafeira, a Portugalbased creative agency whose name means “Friday” in Portuguese. The company said its use of umbrellas was inspired by the Disney classic movie “Mary Poppins.”

Coral Gables was the third city in the United States to host the project, which cost $94,000 to install.

The project was a partnership between the city of Coral Gables, the Coral Gables Community Foundation and the Business Improvement District of Coral Gables.

To help folks take photos, a photographer will be on hand from 6 to 10 p.m. this weekend along the plaza.
