President Donald Trump’s approval rating has declined in Florida.

A Florida Atlantic University poll released Wednesday found 39 percent of the state’s voters approve and 47 percent disapprove of Trump’s performance, a net negative of 8 percentage points.

Just four weeks ago, Trump’s standing was better.

An Aug. 21 FAU poll found 43 percent of the state’s voters approved and 45 percent disapproved of Trump’s performance, a net negative of 2 percentage points.

The decline comes after a tumultuous four weeks of the Trump presidency, including the guilty plea of his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort; his claim that the death toll from the 2017 Hurricane Maria was inflated to make him look bad; and the publication of insider accounts from the White House portraying a dysfunctional president.

1 more poll

A Reuters/Ipsos/University of Virginia Center for Politics Poll, also released Wednesday, had number similar to the FAU poll.

The second poll found 46 percent of likely voters approving of the way Trump is handling his job with 52 percent disapproving. That represents a net negative of 6 percentage points.

Party split

The FAU poll showed sharp divisions along party lines:

79 percent of Democrats disapproving of Trump’s performance.

70 percent of Republicans approving.

35 percent of independent voters approved and 39 percent disapproved.

Negative numbers

In July, the FAU poll found Trump’s net negative was 6 percentage points.

In May, it was also negative 2 percentage points.

In February, he had a net negative of 3 points.

Previous FAU surveys found Trump had a net negative of 6 points in November 2017; 10 percentage points in August 2017; 9 percentage points in June 2017; and 2 percentage points in March 2017.

Worse nationally

The president’s Florida numbers continue to outpace his national numbers. Nationally, a greater share of voters disapprove of Trump’s performance than in Florida.

The RealClearPolitics average of national polls, which includes nine current surveys, shows his approval at 41 percent and his disapproval at 54 percent, a net negative of 13 percentage points.

Fine print

The FAU Business and Economics Polling Initiative survey of 850 Florida likely voters was conducted online and through automated calls to people with landline telephones from Thursday through Sunday.

It had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. Breakdowns for smaller groups, such as Democrats, Republicans and independents, have higher margins of error.

The Reuters/Ipsos/UVA Poll was conducted Sept. 5 to 12. A sample of 2,015 Florida adults, including 1,000 likely voters, were interviewed online. The pollsters said their survey had a credibility interval of plus or minus 4 percentage points. A credibility interval is used as a range of accuracy for online polls in which respondents opt in to participating.
