Punter Matt Haack helping win field position.
DAVIE — Playing only a handful of snaps in a given game, punters usually don’t get too much recognition when it comes to a team’s on-field results.
On Sunday though, Matt Haack played a key role in the Dolphins’ 20-12 win over the Jets. The secondyear punter dropped five of his six punts inside the New York 20-yard line, consistently forcing rookie quarterback Sam Darnold to try to navigate lengthy drives.
“That was a big point [of emphasis] for us … flipping the field,” Dolphins coach Adam Gase said. “[Haack]’s a big part of that. He’s done an outstanding job. What did he have, six punts and five were inside the 20? That’s phenomenal. To make a rookie quarterback drive 80-plus yards every time in his second [NFL] game, that’s what you want to do. You want to try to put that kind of pressure on him.”
The Arizona State alum, who won the starting job last season after signing as an undrafted free agent, has posted a net average of 42.2 yards on his 10 punts this season — up from 40.7 in his rookie campaign. After placing 30 punts inside the 20-yard line last season, Haack is on pace to surpass that total this year.
“The way I look at is, that’s my job,” Haack said. “My job is to put the defense in great field position and win the field-position battle every game . ... That’s just something that’s expected of you.
“I felt like the whole game was just in a rhythm, in a flow. Once one punt started going, it led to the next one, the next one and the next one. We had great coverage on the field, great snaps from John [Denney], good protection, and I think all the way around the special teams was solid.”
For Haack, Sunday’s performance in New York was an improvement from Week 1, when he was unable to land any of his four punts against the Tennessee Titans inside the 20-yard line.
“I felt like I was hitting the ball maybe a little cleaner,” Haack said. “I felt like the first game I hit the ball pretty clean outside of one. Overall, I just kind of got in that rhythm and our team, special teams and all the guys around me, played their role too.”
