AROUND THE HORN

-

■ Rays: Tommy Pham homered twice while extending his onbase streak to 21 games, and the late-surging Rays completed a three-game sweep of the Rangers with a 9-3 victory. The Rays (85-66) have won 14 of their 17 games in September . ... Adrian Beltre hit his 13th homer of the season for the last-place Rangers. It was the 475th of his career to match Stan Musial and Willie Stargell for 30th on the all-time list.

■ Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler will be shut down for the rest of the season as a precaution, ending a career-best year in which he logged nearly 100 more innings than in 2017. Manager Mickey Callaway said the team would be “probably taking the best care of him” by holding him out of his final two starts. “I feel like I had a good season,” Wheeler said. “I would have liked to have finished it out, but ... it makes sense to kind of shut it down and not really push it.” Wheeler missed two full seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2015.

■ Red Sox: The Red Sox hadn’t yet clinched the American League East championship, but a banner marking the accomplishment has already been unveiled. Boston-area friends Louie Iacuzzi, James Amaral and Randy Baldasarri say they found the banner on a road Monday after it apparently fell off a delivery truck in Somerville, Mass. The trio held on to the banner for two days, hoping they’d be rewarded with tickets or a chance to meet their favorite players. Instead, the Boston Globe reported, the men brought the banner to Fenway Park on Wednesday and returned empty handed.

■ Indians: The Indians want Trevor Bauer in their postseason rotation. The next step will come Friday against the Red Sox in his first game since he broke his right leg last month. Manager Terry Francona said Bauer will pitch a “couple of innings” and then throw in the bullpen to increase his pitch count. Francona wants Bauer to make two additional starts in the regular season.
