Hate crime suspect with AK-47 killed

- By Doug Phillips

The pounding sound of repeated gunfire, blasting sirens, and darkness painted by the blue and red lights of numerous police cars played out in northwest Miami-Dade late Thursday.

When it was over, a man wanted by the FBI was dead and “a high-powered rifle was recovered at the scene,” according to Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, a police spokesman.

The FBI identified the dead man as Alexander Carballido, 40, an ex-convict who was being sought for a home invasion robbery that happened Wednesday.

Carballido was released from state prison in July, the Miami Herald reported, after serving time for carjacking and assaulting a police officer.

As the dramatic scene unfolded below the upper floor of his nearby apartment, Jorge Pescador’s wife recorded the chaos on cellphone video and is heard repeatedly exclaiming, “Oh my God!”

Pescador told WSVN his wife shipped him the chilling video because the police barricades prevented him from getting home during the incident.

Miami-Dade police and Miami police were assisting the FBI when the shootout happened near Northwest Seventh Street and 72nd Avenue, according to information provided by both agencies.

The area is just south of Miami International Airport and framed by the Dolphin Expressway (State Road 836) and the Palmetto Expressway (State Road 826).

The man targeted by the investigation fled from officers and began shooting at them, police said.

He was fatally shot at the scene. There were no other injuries.

Brian Waterman, an FBI spokesman, told reporters at the scene early Friday that the man was the target of a fugitive investigation.

“He was involved in a hate crime investigation,” Waterman said.

The scene remained under intense police investigation until late Friday morning when the tarp-covered car containing the body of the man believed to be Carballido was towed from the scene.
