Cubs: Major League Baseball placed SS Addison Russell on administra­tive leave after he was accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife, Melisa Reidy, on a blog post. Reidy alleged years of physical and emotional abuse. The 24-year-old Russell, who denied the allegation­s, can challenge the leave before an arbitrator, and the leave can be extended for additional sevenday periods if the union agrees. He will continued to be paid his $3.2 million salary. Last year, Reidy posted a photo on her Instagram account with a caption suggesting her then-husband of about 18 months had been unfaithful to her. In another post, a user — described by Melisa as a close friend — made the accusation that Russell had “hit” his wife. The post was later deleted. Russell denied the allegation and the two divorced . ... Against his former team, LHP Jose Quintana was charged with five runs and nine hits in fiveplus innings in a 10-4 loss to the host White Sox. OF Kyle Schwarber (lower back) returned to the lineup as the DH after missing nine games. The NL Centrallea­ding Cubs, who gave up a season-high 19 hits in the loss, began the day with a 2 1 ⁄2 -game lead over the Brewers.

Tigers: DH Victor Martinez said the last game of his career will be Saturday at home against the Royals. The 39-year-old five- time All-Star announced in August that he was likely to retire after the end of the season. But he moved the date up slightly so he could play his last game at Comerica Park.

Indians, Red Sox: RHP Trevor Bauer started Friday’s game against the Red Sox, allowing two hits and no runs in 11⁄3 innings in his first action since breaking his right leg after being struck by a line drive Aug. 11. Indians manager Terry Francona said before the game that Bauer would be on a pitch count . ... Josh Donaldson’s solo home run during the fourth inning ended Red Sox LHP Chris Sale’s streak of 75 consecutiv­e innings without allowing a homer.
