Clemson announced that freshman Trevor Lawrence will take over as the team’s starting quarterback Saturday against unbeaten Syracuse. Senior Kelly Bryant had been the starter after leading the Tigers to the College Football Playoffs last season. Lawrence, ESPN’s No. 2 overall recruit this year, has come off the bench in No. 3 Clemson’s first four games. He completed 13 of 18 passes for 176 yards with four TDs in last weekend’s win over Georgia Tech . ... Virginia Tech sophomore QB Josh Jackson will undergo surgery Tuesday for a fractured fibula in his left leg and will be out indefinitely. Jackson suffered the injury during last weekend’s upset loss to Old Dominion. Junior Ryan Willis will start Saturday against No. 22 Duke . ... Senior G Garrett Brumfield will miss No. 5 LSU’s game against Mississippi on Saturday because of a left knee injury. Brumfield suffered the injury last weekend during the Tigers’ win over Louisiana Tech. There’s no timetable yet for Brumfield’s return . ... Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy announced that senior WR Jalen McCleskey will redshirt and transfer after the year for his final season. McCleskey has 167 career receptions for 1,865 yards and 17 TDs for the Cowboys, but didn’t feel that he touched the ball enough. He had 15 catches for 155 yards and two TDs in four games this season . ... Northwestern sophomore RB Jeremy Larkin retired from football after being diagnosed with cervical stenosis, a condition that causes narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck and upper back. Larkin’s condition isn’t life threatening.
