HOUSTON – Leonte Carroo gets another opportunity to prove he’s worth the third-round draft pick the Miami Dolphins used to select him in 2016.

Carroo, a member of the Dolphins’ practice squad this season, was promoted to Miami’s 53-man roster on Wednesday ahead of Thursday night’s game against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium.

The roster move was expected because of Miami’s numerous injuries at receiver, following the season-ending hip injury Albert Wilson suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions, and the groin injury that will keep Kenny Stills sidelined for at least Thursday’s game.

Wilson was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, creating the roster spot for Carroo.

Danny Amendola, who is nursing a shoulder injury, Jakeem Grant, who nursing an Achilles injury, and DeVante Parker, who has missed two of the last three games because of a quadriceps injury, are likely to see a heavy workload ahead of Carroo, who will provide depth.

The Dolphins likely picked Carroo over fellow practice squad receivers Isaiah Ford and Malcolm Lewis because of his experience. He’s played in 28 games the past two seasons. Carroo has started two games in his NFL career and has contributed 10 receptions for 98 yards and one touchdown.

“I felt like the practice squad has definitely built my confidence back up,” said Carroo, who was cut from Miami’s roster before the season, then signed to the practice squad.

Carroo has spent the bulk of his practice time this season working with Brock Osweiler, who will start his third game of the season in place of Ryan Tannehill, who is nursing a shoulder injury.

Two TEs questionable:

The Dolphins may have a serious shortage of pass catchers available for Osweiler in Thursday night’s game.

Two of Miami’s best tight ends were listed as questionable for the game because of the injuries they are nursing.

Rookie Mike Gesicki, who suffered a shoulder injury in last Sunday’s loss to the Lions, and A.J. Derby, who has spent most of this season rehabbing a foot injury, were the only players listed as questionable on Wednesday’s injury report.

Derby, a four-year veteran, was viewed as the Dolphins’ starting tight end before the foot injury flared up in training camp. He’s played in three games this season, contributing three catches for 35 yards and one touchdown. Coach Adam Gase acknowledged that Derby’s foot injury suffered a setback last week.

Gesicki, a former Penn State standout selected in the second round of the draft, has started two of the seven games he’s played this season. He has contributed 12 catches for 132 yards, and seemed to have a breakout game against the Lions with three passes for 44 yards.
