A University of Miami student was asleep in his offcampus apartment when a homeless man walked in through an unlocked door and stabbed him more than 60 times, Miami-Dade police said Thursday.

Police announced the arrest of Robert Wayne Gore in connection with the killing of UM architecture student Yasser Talal Ibrahim Abualfaraj, 23.

Working with Coral Gables police, the investigation identified Gore, 28, as a suspect in Abualaraj’s killing, police said.

He was taken into custody Wednesday near Southwest 200th Street and South Dixie Highway

The body of Abualfaraj was found Oct. 7 inside his apartment on the 6500 block of Santona Street in Coral Gables.

After Gore went into Abualfaraj’s apartment he “armed himself with multiple sharp weapons,” and then stabbed Abualfaraj “over 60 times,” according to a Miami-Dade police arrest report.

Gore was charged with first-degree murder and armed burglary.

Following his arrest, he confessed to the killing police said.

The arrest report doesn’t detail what led investigators to Gore or mention a motive for the crime.

According to the Miami Herald, sources said DNA found inside Abualaraj’s apartment matched that of Gore, who has a history of minor arrests, and randomly broke into the apartment in an effort to find money or drugs.
