Publix will open a new store in Oakland Park next month in the old Safeway building.

The chain will have a grand opening at the new Dixie Crossing store at 950 E. Commercial Blvd. at 7 a.m. Thursday.

The new Publix, which is across the street from a busy Publix in the Northridge Shopping Center, will have a Starbucks coffee shop, pharmacy and a liquor store that opened in early September.

There are no plans to close the older Publix once the new store opens, said spokeswoman Nicole Krauss. She noted there are Publix markets across the street from each other in Miami Beach.

Publix acquired the Safeway store, along with two others in Alamonte Springs and Largo, in June. The other stores will also be converted to Publix markets.

In 2016, Albertsons converted the three Florida stores into Safeways after merging with the company in 2015. Safeway spent nearly $10 million in each store renovation to add Starbucks coffee shops and expand specialty and organic food selections before Publix bought them.

The grocer also plans to open a re-imagined organic Green Wise Market serving beer and wine in Boca Raton in 2019. An opening date was not announced.

Publix has more than 1,187 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina and operates nearly 240 liquor stores.
