Book, Parkland survivors receive awards

State Sen. Lauren Book was honored Monday as one of the “Heroes Among Us” at Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year Summit and Awards Ceremony in New York City.

The magazine recognized her for her work in raising awareness about child sexual abuse nationally and globally. Book, D-Plantation, is the founder and chief executive officer of the South Floridabas­ed nonprofit Lauren’s Kids, which educates children and adults about sex abuse prevention.

The “Heroes Among Us” award celebrates women who have helped to empower others.

“It is a tremendous honor to be chosen to stand alongside these brave, powerful and outspoken women who have used their voices and actions to become agents of change,” said Book, who had also attended a Glamour Women of the Year Summit panel discussion where she talked about surviving childhood sexual abuse for six years and her her work in helping other survivors heal. “I want to thank Glamour and L’Oreal Paris for providing a platform to address childhood sexual abuse and shatter the stigma that so often surrounds this issue.”

Three Parkland school shooting survivors and activists also received their “Women of the Year” awards from the magazine Monday.

The current and former Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students who were honored were Emma Gonzalez, Jaclyn Corin and Samantha Fuentes. Fuentes suffered entrance wounds from shrapnel on her face in the Feb. 14 massacre.
