Parkland parent Andrew Pollack featured on cover of Time magazine

Story to share tragedies, perspectives on gun violence

The parents of students who were shot in schools across the country are featured in a new cover story for Time magazine.

And appearing on the cover with six parents is Andrew Pollack whose daughter Meadow, 18, was one of the 17 students and faculty members killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Senior High in February

The other parents on the cover lost their children in school shootings such as Columbine, Sandy Hook and Great Mills, Maryland.

The story delves into their shared tragedies and their different perspectives on how to prevent gun violence in schools.

In the article, Pollack described his loss. “I used to have a good life, a blessed life, but it’s ruined now,” he said. “She didn’t ‘die.’ She didn’t ‘pass away.’ She was shot nine times at school. She was murdered.”

Also included in the article but not on the cover are Mitchell and Annika Dworet, the parents of 17-year-old Nicholas, a Stoneman Douglas swimmer who was also killed. Mitchell Dworet told the magazine that after the shooting, other parents of slain students outside Florida reached out to him to offer “support, guidance and understanding.” And then he wanted “to pay it forward” by doing the same a month later after the shooting at Great Mills High School in Maryland.

It’s not the first the national magazine has cast a spotlight on the Parkland community. In April, five Stoneman Douglas students were featured on the cover standing above the headline “ENOUGH.” The students at the time were Jaclyn Corin, Alex Wind, Emma Gonzalez, Cameron Kasky and David Hogg. The article presented slices of their lives since the shooting.
