Interesting: Dolphins excel at being boring
DAVIE — The Miami Dolphins may not be good enough for a deep run in the playoffs or bad enough to tank for a franchise player in the upcoming NFL draft.
And some at Sports Illustrated believe the Dolphins are boring, uninteresting and lingering around mediocrity because of these distinctions.
The Dolphins (5-6) were considered one of eight of the most boring teams in the NFL this season, according to a Friday post from SI’s MMQB podcast group.
“No franchise has simply plodded along quite like the Dolphins,” wrote Mitch Goldich, who added that quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s era has been “extended run of mediocrity.”
Another writer praised Miami as the sexiest city in the NFL, but was not so complementary of Tannehill and Dolphins coach Adam Gase.
“This is not to say the Dolphins are a bad team or poorly coached. Rather, there is simply nothing particularly interesting about them. They have a boring coach and a boring quarterback [Tannehill] who is injured a lot,” Andrew Brandt wrote.
“They seem to always be a team — albeit with some success — that’s a year away from being a year away.”
Another writer named the Jaguars as the most boring team, but not before taking a dig at the Dolphins after last week’s 27-24 loss to the Colts.
“At this very moment, the Dolphins are the most boring team because they run the ball on third-and-10 in the final moments of a tie game,” Gary Gramling wrote.
The Dolphins and Jaguars were joined by the Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets and even the New England Patriots as most boring NFL teams.
The Dolphins, after starting the season 3-0, have lost six of their last eight games.
Still, Miami is adamant about its position for a push in the AFC playoff mix.
The Dolphins are ranked eighth among AFC teams after 11 weeks with hopes of getting back to .500 against the Buffalo Bills at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.
The last five weeks of the Dolphins season could be eventful, or uneventful, depending on your point of view.
