Two LSU players were trying to sell an electronic item when one of them fatally shot an 18-year-old man trying to rob them Saturday, Baton Rouge, La., police said in a statement. The Associated Press reported that the players were RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire and LB Jared Smallwere. The man killed was identified by police as Kobe Johnson. He wasn’t an LSU student and died at the scene. The players called police, waited at the scene, were questioned and were released while the investigation continues. After Johnson displayed a weapon, one of the players pulled out a handgun and fired multiple times, police said. Authorities haven’t said whether the player was licensed to carry the firearm he used. LSU hasn’t yet decided on EdwardsHelaire’s and Johnson’s status for the Tigers game against UCF in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1 . ... Florida State made it official, announcing that it hired former Houston assistant Kendal Briles as its offensive coordinator and QBs coach. Briles, 36, replaces Walt Bell, who took the head coaching job at UMass earlier this month. ... J’Mar Smith threw one TD pass and ran for another in a big third quarter to lead Louisiana Tech to a 31-14 win over Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl on Saturday night in Honolulu. The Bulldogs (8-5) rallied from a 7-3 halftime deficit to secure their fifth bowl victory in as many seasons, a program first. Louisiana Tech DE Jaylon Ferguson became the NCAA’s career sacks leader when he dropped Hawaii QB Chevan Cordeiro for a 2yard loss late in the third. Ferguson’s 45 sacks broke the previous mark set by Arizona State’s Terrell Suggs. Hawaii (8-6) played without WR John Ursua, who leads the nation with 16 TD catches. Ursua, sidelined with an undisclosed injury, was ruled out just minutes before the start of the game.
