CORAL GABLES — During his time at Miami, Dennis Erickson led the Hurricanes to a pair of national titles — including one in his first year as coach.

Now the coach is a Hall of Famer.

Erickson on Monday was named one of 15 players or coaches set to be inducted this year into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Erickson will be the fourth Hurricanes coach to receive the honor, joining 1980 inductee Jack Harden, 1985 inductee Andy Gustafson and 2012 inductee Jimmy Johnson.

He is the 12th Hurricane overall to be inducted.

Along with leading UM to national titles in 1989 and 1991, Erickson — who is already a member of the UM Sports Hall of Fame — posted a 63-9 record at Miami from 1989-94.

His 87.5 winning percentage remains the highest in school history and he is the lone Hurricanes coach to lead the program to two titles. Miami also played for championships in 1992 and 1994 under his guidance.

When he led Miami to the 1989 championship, Erickson became just the second Division I coach to win a national championship in his first year at a school. His 1991 championship team was only the second team in UM history to post a 12-0 record.

Erickson led Miami to three Big East titles after the Hurricanes joined the conference in 1991, and the Hurricanes went 35-1 at home during his tenure in Coral Gables. Miami also earned bowl berths in each of his six seasons and Miami never finished lower than third in any of the final college football polls from 1989-92.

“Congratulations to Dennis Erickson on his election to the College Football Hall of Fame,” UM athletic director Blake James said in a statement Monday. “He led the Hurricanes to two national championships, and authored one of the most dominant stretches in college football history over his six seasons as our head coach. We are thrilled and honored to have Coach Erickson as the latest representative of The U in the College Football Hall of Fame.”

Along with the three coaches already enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame, former Hurricanes greats Bennie Blades (2006), Don Bosseler (1990), Ted Hendricks (1987), Russell Maryland (2011), Ed Reed (2018), Vinny Testaverde (2013), Gino Torretta (2009) and Arnold Tucker (2008) have all been inducted.

Rosier earns bowl invite:

Hurricanes quarterback Malik Rosier has earned an invitation to this weekend's Tropical Bowl, which is set to showcase draft-eligible prospects in Daytona Beach this weekend.

He is one of several Hurricanes who will be participating in post-season showcase games.

Among them are defensive tackle Gerald Willis III and safeties Jaquan Johnson and Sheldrick Redwine, who are headed to the Reese’s Senior Bowl; offensive lineman Tyree St. Louis and cornerback Michael Jackson, who are headed to the East-West Shrine Game and center Tyler Gauthier, who is headed to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.
