‘Rebellious American’

Mash’d ‘moonshine’ restaurant coming to Davie Tower Shops

- By Michael Mayo South Florida Sun Sentinel

Mash’d, a chain from Texas that bills itself as “rebellious American,” is coming to the Tower Shops in Davie. The restaurant is scheduled to open Feb. 20.

The menu features food made from scratch along with stocks and sauces that incorporate corn mash “moonshine” from distilleries in Tennessee and Kentucky. Some menu items are a mashup of cuisines and cultures, such as nacho meatball pizza, bulgogi tacos and a Vietnamese “pho-king” soup made with gulf shrimp stock, lemongrass, ginger, noodles and akaushi beef. The restaurant also features glutenfree and vegetarian options.

The new location, the fourth overall and first outside Texas, will be dog-friendly on the patio and family-friendly everywhere, says Mash’d social media director Sarah Loeb. She says alcohol burns off during cooking and all dishes are safe to eat by children. “Our moonshine barbecue sauce is very popular,” Loeb says. Cocktails also feature house-infused moonshine, including the signature Pineapple Bomb with pineapple, Madagascar vanilla bean and cinnamon-infused corn mash.

“We’re a neighborhood place. We build strong relationships with our communities.”

Sarah Loeb, Mash’d social media director

David Kazarian, the executive chef and co-founder, once worked for Pei Wei and other major chains but tired of the corporate restaurant world. He started Mash’d with a longtime friend in 2013 in suburban Dallas (Plano) and in 2015 they opened locations in San Antonio and Fort Worth.

South Florida is a logical expansion site, Loeb says, because of the area’s diversity. The Tower Shops is a highly trafficked strip shopping center off the tourist path, which aligns with Mash’d’s philosophy. “We’re a neighborhood place,” Loeb says. “We build strong relationships with our communities.”

The restaurant, which should appeal to a younger crowd, is located near an educational hub that includes Nova Southeastern University and Broward College. The eatery is big, with 35 tables inside and seating for more than 150.

The patio features a giant wooden high chair/beach chair that patrons can use as a photo/ Instagram prop. Loeb calls the restaurant a “fun and socially connected” place. Among the amenities: TV screens featuring a live Twitter feed with the Mash’d hashtag (#MashdDavie) and custom YouTube channels.
