Sun Sentinel Palm Beach Edition

March events to know about

- By Rod Stafford Hagwood South Florida Sun Sentinel

March is in like a lion here in South Florida with scores of things to do in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Here are some of our favorite suggestions.

March 1 and 7 — Celeb photographer focuses on book

There are some South Florida event producers who let out a sigh of relief when they look out over their red carpet and see celebrity photographer Manny Hernandez. That’s because the Miami native has a knack for being where famous faces are likely to show up — Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Dr. Dre, Shakira, Gianni Versace, Cher, Martha Stewart, Antonio Banderas, Ricky Martin, Sly Stallone, Cindy Crawford, Liz Taylor, Jamie Foxx, George Clooney.

And now he’s compiled some of his favorite shots from the heady ‘90s into his first book, “Candids Miami” (Wynwood Books; 2018, $30). This is the first of three tomes he plans on rolling out.

But for now, you can probably get a selfie with Hernandez at two book signings. The first is at 7 p.m. on March 1 at Books and Books, 265 Aragon Ave., in Coral Gables (his photos will be on display). The second is at 6:30 p.m. March 7 at Books and Books Bal Harbor, 9700 Collins Ave, in Bal Harbour.

March 1 — 30 years of yada-yada-yada

Everyone knows the ’90s sitcom “Seinfeld” was full of memorable bits, catch phrases and characters — re-gifting, sparing squares, master of my domain, Soup Nazi, Newman, etc. Now, fans of the TV show can compete against one another in a trivia contest paying homage to the TV show’s 30th anniversary.

Seinfeld Trivia will be hosted by David R. Gordon (Empire Stage’s owner) and Sheba Mason (daughter of funnyman Jackie Mason). By the way, the next night on March 2 at 8 p.m., Mason will do her standup act ($25, 954-678-1496, ShebaMason.com).

Seinfeld Trivia 30th Anniversary Edition starts at 8 p.m. at Empire Stage,1140 N. Flagler Drive, in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $25 for Seinfeld Trivia or the Sheba Mason show ($15 if you use the code FUNNY). To order, call 954-678-1496 or go to EmpireStage.com.

March 1-3, 8-10 — ‘Sea Shorts’ by the sea shore

Once again the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Community Theater Arts Group will stage eight 10-minute plays in the oceanside community. The best part? It’s totally free. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays March 1, 2, 8 and 9, and 4 p.m. Sundays March 3 and 10. The Sea Shorts Shorts Play Festival takes place at Jarvis Hall, 4505 N. Ocean Drive, in Lauderdaleby-the-Sea.

March 2 — We don’t have any limits

The Limitless event — which is billed as an immersive art and music experience — will take place during the 13th Street Beer and Wine Festival with Car Show. From 4 p.m to midnight there will be five bands and 21 artists doing their thing. In addition to the live music performances, expect some live art collaborations, silkscreen printing, interactive art and DJ Vinyl Dance Party. The party is at 690 NE 13th St., in Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free (wristbands for the festival’s beer and wine tastings are $35).

March 9-April 6 — Mattel me about Barbie

Did you know that Barbie is 60 years old? Yup. The fashion doll was “born” March 9, 1959. And you can celebrate her birthday at a free exhibit at Art Gallery 21 in Wilton Manors. Also featured will be local artists and photographers Brett Butler and Rodger Helt, both Wilton Manors residents, and Wayne Nilson from Fort Lauderdale. The installation is open from noon to 8 p.m. ThursdaysSaturdays. The gallery is at 600 NE 21st Court, in Wilton Manors.
