Dolphins sign former Jaguars offensive lineman Reed

- By Safid Deen

The Miami Dolphins added a much-needed interior lineman to the roster to bolster their offensive line.

Chris Reed, who has spent the past four seasons as a backup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, signed a deal to join the Dolphins on Monday.

Reed could compete for Miami’s starting left guard position next season, a significant position of need after the Dolphins released veterans Ted Larsen and Josh Sitton earlier this month.

Reed will reunite in Miami with new Dolphins offensive line coach Pat Flaherty, who coached him in Jacksonville the past two seasons.

Reed has played in 25 games with eight starts, seven at left guard and one at right guard. He signed with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent from Minnesota State in 2015.

After spending his rookie season on the Jaguars practice squad, Reed played 10 games with four starts in 2015. He played in six games with three starts in 2016, before finishing the season on injured reserve with a toe injury. He played in nine games with a start last season.

Larsen, a nine-year veteran who started in 21 games at left guard for the Dolphins from 2017-18, was released in a move that saved Miami roughly $2.1 million in salary-cap space.

Larsen’s down-field block for Dolphins running back Kenyan Drake’s 69-yard, game-winning touchdown propelled Miami past the New England Patriots during the Miami Miracle game in December.

Larsen started 13 of 15 games at left guard last season after Sitton, an offseason acquisition a year ago, tore his rotator cuff during his first game with the Dolphins last season. Sitton was released, saving Miami $5 million in salarycap room.
