Free Nitro Cold Brew today
Starbucks will give away free eye-opening shots of Nitro Cold Brew coffee from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at participating locations.
The small-batch coffee is infused with nitrogen, which gives it a rich, creamy head and a smooth taste, the company says.
Order the velvety brew, available in most stores, and it soon will be served in a cup with a newly redesigned strawless lid. The recyclable lid — which resembles a sippy cup for adults — has a raised spout with a teardropshaped opening about the size of a thumbprint. It still accommodates a straw, which is available on request.
The new strawless lid for cold drinks is part of the Seattle-based company’s promise to eliminate the use of a billion straws a year by 2020. The lids are being introduced in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, San Diego and Toronto, Starbucks announced on Twitter.
Starbucks says the new polypropylene lid uses 9 percent less plastic than the old lid and straw.
Frappuccinos and other blended drinks will still be served with domed lids and green plastic straws, for now. Those straws will be replaced with a plastic alternative by 2020.
In 2019, Starbucks invested $10 million to develop a fully recyclable and compostable hot cup with the NextGen Cup Consortium and Challenge, the company said.
Customers who bring reusable cups to Starbucks save 10 cents on drink purchases to reduce waste and encourage sustainability.
