SUNRISE – A masked robber hit Foot Locker in the Sawgrass Mills mall as employees were closing up shop — and now the FBI has joined Sunrise police to search for the gunman.

The bandit struck at about 10 p.m. on April 22 as two employees were locking up and leaving, police said.

According to the incident report, the robber rushed in through the opened door wearing a scarf over his face, carrying a backpack, and holding a small semi-automatic handgun.

He went straight to cash register No. 3, where all that day’s money was kept. Surveillance video shows him kneeling behind the counter, placing the gun on the floor, and filling the backpack with cash before running to the rear of the store.

The manager said there was nothing back there so the robber turned around and ran out the front, police said.

There were no customers in the store at the time of the robbery and there were no injuries, investigators said.

Security cameras did get a picture of the suspect running through the mall.

The FBI and its South Florida Violent Crime Fugitive Task Force are working with Sunrise police as part of an initiative to assist local law enforcement agencies in combating violent armed robberies.

Agents are asking anyone who recognizes the robber in the surveillance images or who has any information about the robbery to contact the FBI at 754-703-2000.

Anonymous tips can be given to Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 and online at browardcrimestoppers.org.
