New attraction coming to Epcot
Disney announces ride inspired by ‘Moana,’ and ‘Star Wars’ hotel
A new attraction based on Disney’s “Moana” is coming to Epcot and the official name of the “Star Wars” hotel at Hollywood Studios has been revealed as part of the first announcements emerging from D23 Expo, a gathering of the official Disney fan club in California.
“When Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana opens, it will let guests interact with magical, living water in a beautiful and inspiring setting,” Disney said on its parks blog. In the 2016 film, “Moana,” the daughter of a chief of a Polynesian village, goes on an adventure in the ocean to save her people.
Walt Disney World spokespeople would not say more Friday about Journey of Water, including when it will open or details about the ride experience.
The previously announced hotel, dubbed a “vacation experience” by Disney, will be known as Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. The ship itself, in Disney lore, will be known as the Halcyon.
“Guests will check in for a twonight adventure aboard a glamorous starship. Once onboard, guests will interact with characters and become active participants in stories that unfold around them on their galactic journey,” according to the Disney Parks Blog post.
The hotel, currently under construction, will be adjacent to Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park and its Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land, which opens Aug. 29.
D23 is holding an event in Anaheim, Calif., through Sunday. Disney often reveals new rides and its latest plans at the D23 Expo.
More details are anticipated when Bob Chapek, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, makes a presentation on Sunday.
It’s no secret of Disney’s plans to overhaul Epcot.
Disney is replacing the longtime fireworks show “IllumiNations” in October. Under construction are a “Guardians of the Galaxy” roller coaster in Future World and a “Ratatouille”-based ride in the France pavilion. There are plans for a play pavilion in the former Wonders of Life area.
The entrance of the theme park is getting an overhaul, including the removal of the Leave a Legacy monuments. And the Disney Skyliner gondola transportation system, set to open in late September, will have a station at Epcot.
