Will Rolling Stones be able to perform concert Saturday?

- By Ben Crandell

“Oh, a storm is threatening, my very life today,” said the most famous weather forecast in rock ’n’ roll history. “If I don’t get some shelter, oh yeah, I’m gonna fade away.”

The likelihood that Mick Jagger will find a haven for the opening lines of “Gimme Shelter” at the Rolling Stones concert at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Saturday was still up in the air on Wednesday evening as Hurricane Dorian danced through the Caribbean.

In its most recent update, the storm was predicted to make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane, tracking toward Central Florida. The eye of the storm was projected to reach shore sometime Sunday or Monday.

Wednesday evening a representative for the tour said the weather system was being monitored, but that no changes had been made to the band’s schedule.

“All moving ahead as planned,” said a spokesperson for tour promoter AEG Presents.

You can’t always get what you want, but a cancellation of the concert — the final performance on the iconic rock band’s No Filter Tour and long a sell-out — would be hard to take.

After all, this show faded away once already, moved from April 20 tour opener to Aug. 31 tour closer to accommodate singer Mick Jagger’s heart surgery.

In the meantime, critics have stoked South Florida fans’ anticipation even higher with rave reviews across the country.

“The Stones can still find ways to surprise not just their fans, but each other,” Chicago Tribune reviewer Greg Kot wrote, describing Jagger in particular as “fit, energetic and particularly animated.”

This was true through the final encore of the Chicago show, which opened the tour in June, when Jagger’s soulful vocal left Keith Richards “with an expression that merged amusement and wonder.”

The concert-closer was a song that South Florida fans may be especially looking forward to singing with Jagger: “Satisfaction.”
