More than 25 South Fla. nursing homes are still without generators

- By Cindy Krischer Goodman

On Friday, staff from the Agency for Health Care Administration made site visits to nursing homes throughout the state that still lack generators or an evacuation plan — 25 of those nursing homes are in Broward County.

The agency has released an online map to show which nursing homes or senior facilities have generators or are expecting to get them — and which have yet to submit their hurricane plans to the state. The plans detail how the facility and staff will care for elderly patients should Hurricane Dorian cause damage or lead to power outages. Thirtythree nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Broward County now have fully implement plans that include permanent generators.

Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke out about the site visits AHCA officials will make today during a press conference. For senior facilities, generators can be the difference between life and death. Just last week, four healthcare workers were charged with aggravated manslaughter in connection with the deaths of 12 people at a stifling hot Hollywood nursing home in September 2017 after Hurricane Irma cut power to the facility’s air-conditioning system. The arrests came after a two-year criminal investigation into the dozen heat-related deaths at The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood

Hills.

While unusual, Hollywood Police Chief Chris O’Brien said the charges were merited because the four workers “didn’t do enough” to save the residents who died. The youngest to die was 57 and the oldest was 99.

As of mid-day Friday, 15 Broward County nursing facilities awaited temporary generators to be delivered and 21 had temporary generators in place.

At this time, no senior facilities in Broward County plan to evacuate should they lose power.

The Agency for Health Care Administration has not made it clear whether there is a deadline or enforcement plan in place for those nursing homes and assisted care facilities that lack generators or evacuation plans prior to the potential arrival of Hurricane Dorian.
