Yankees: James Paxton allowed one hit and struck out 12 over seven innings in a 10-1 victory over the Rangers. The Yankees belted five home runs — two by Gary Sanchez — in a quick, offensive response to the club’s first shutout in over a calendar year . ... INF Edwin Encarnacion was activated from the injured list before the game against the Rangers. Encarnacion missed 30 games with a fractured right wrist and appeared in two rehab games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before returning. He was injured when he was hit by pitch from Red Sox reliever Josh Smith on Aug. 3.

Astros: CF George Springer was carted off the field after he collided with the wall catching a ball. Springer caught Ryan Braun’s long fly ball in the fifth inning and hit the wall. His head snapped back and he fell to the ground. He immediately grabbed the back of his head as his glove fell off. Astros medical personnel raced out to assist him. After a momentary delay, he was carted off the field by Miller Park medical personnel.

Rays: CF Austin Meadows homered and seven relievers combined on a five-hitter and the playoffcontending Rays blanked the Orioles 2-0 in Game 2 to split a doubleheader. The Rays, who began the day with a slight lead atop the AL wild-card race, had their five-game winning streak stopped with a 4-2 loss in the opener. The first game of the twinbill was originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but was moved up in advance as a precaution for Hurricane Dorian.

Cubs: All-Star 3B Kris Bryant was scratched from the Cubs’ lineup against the Mariners because of right knee soreness. While INF Ben Zobrist and C Willson Contreras returned to the lineup, Bryant was replaced by Ian Happ.

Mets: The team activated 2B Robinson Cano from the injured list after he missed nearly a month with a torn left hamstring. Cano wasn’t in the lineup against the Nationals, but manager Mickey Callaway said the veteran would be available off the bench. Cano was hitting .252 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs in his first season with the Mets after a trade from the Mariners.

Rangers: Joey Gallo’s workload has increased with each passing day since his July 25 surgery to remove the broken hamate bone from his right hand. He has advanced to the point where he should take batting practice on the field during the three-game series against the Yankees.

Brewers: Struggling RHP Jeremy Jeffress was released. He is eligible to sign with any other club but would not be postseason eligible this season. Jeffress was 3-4 with a 5.02 ERA in 48 appearances this season after going 8-1 with 15 saves and a 1.29 ERA in an All-Star season in 2018.

Pirates: Rookie RHP Mitch Keller was pulled in the second inning against the Marlins after being struck in the right wrist by a line drive. Keller was injured on a comebacker hit by Garrett Cooper. Considered the Pirates’ top prospect entering the season, Keller was making his eighth major league start. He is 1-3 with an 8.18 ERA.
