FSU: Taggart pushing Seminoles to fix mistakes before facing Virginia.

TALLAHASSEE — FSU coach Willie Taggart said his team has to do the little things that are required to be successful, including eliminating selfish penalties, after holding on for a win over Louisiana-Monroe in overtime Saturday.

“I hate to sit here and say that it’s just because it’s a different team. Last week, those penalties and those things [weren’t] much of an issue. This past week it was,” he said. “We’ve got to continue to stress it. We’ve got to continue to teach the proper way of playing the game. It goes back to what I said before about learning how to win again and teaching our guys again how to win.”

The Seminoles (1-1, 0-0 ACC) must master those lessons quickly before they hit the road to take on No. 25 Virginia (2-0, 1-0) that prides itself on defense. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and the game will air on ACC Network.

“They’re well coached. They’ve got some talented guys in the secondary. Up front, they’re strong. Linebackers are big and strong, physical, but they’re well coached and can play hard,” Taggart said of the Cavaliers’ defense.

Moving forward, Taggart said he still believes in James Blackman as the starting quarterback.

“James played well on Saturday. He graded out higher than he did the week before,” Taggart said. “He did make better reads than what he did the week before. So he played well.”

The defense was another story. Taggart said the coaches weren’t pleased with the unit’s performance as a whole on Saturday, but he said problem is not as much scheme as it is everyone doing their jobs.

“No, I don’t want to put this on just a three-four or the schematic of things. If you really paid attention to the game last week, we didn’t run a lot of threefour,” he said.

“We ran a lot of fourdown. I haven’t necessarily seen them struggle in what we’re doing because a lot of plays we got beat in, we were in four-down. So we’ve just got to call and run the defense the way we say we’re going to do it and allow our guys to make plays and make sure we’re coaching them up and they’re in the gap and making sure that we’re holding guys accountable; everyone accountable to doing their job.”

Taggart said when there are struggles like the ones the defense has been having early this season, everyone and everything is under review.

“Well, you’re always evaluating your team. You’ve got to always evaluate them and make sure you got the right guys in there,” he said. “If guys continue to make mistakes, shame on you if you allow them to continue to play. But you’re always evaluating your roster and making sure that you do the right thing for your team that will put you in the best position to win.”

Etc.

FSU posted a job opening for a quality control analyst on Glassdoor.com Sunday. The job description is as follows:

“Analyzes film data on current team and opponents and provides summary report and analysis to coaching staff and players. Assists with the coordination of daily administrative support, statistical analyses, and opponent preparation to include, but is not limited to: The coordination of video cuts and distribution of preliminary offensive, defensive, and special teams scouting reports. Assists self-scouting offensive, defensive and special team’s schemes. Supports the walk-on program with their research of prospective student athletes.”

When asked about the job post, Taggart repsonded, “It’s a position that we just opened again.”

Offensive lineman Jauan Williams left Saturday’s game with an ankle sprain and Taggart said the staff will evaluate him this week to see if he can play against Virginia.

Taggart said punter Logan Tyler has been suspended indefinitely.

After setting a program record for carries with 36, FSU’s Cam Akers was named this week’s ACC Running Back of the Week.
