Red Sox:

David Ortiz threw out the first pitch prior to the rare Monday night series finale against the Yankees at Fenway Park in Boston. It was Ortiz’s first public appearance since he was shot and seriously injured June 9 in his native Dominican Republic. Red Sox and Yankees players stood near their dugouts and applauded as Ortiz was introduced. The fans gave him a rousing ovation as he bounded up the steps of the dugout with no apparent effects from the shooting and three surgeries. Ortiz, 43, took a microphone on the pitcher’s mound and thanked Red Sox fans for their prayers and support. He then took a seat in the front row of the stands, next to the Red Sox dugout. The 10-time All-Star slugger played for the Red Sox from 2003-16, helping the franchise win three World Series championships.

Yankees:

LF Mike Tauchman likely will miss six to eight weeks, essentially the rest of the regular season and the postseason, after straining his left calf during the Yankees’ 10-5 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday night in Boston. Tauchman limped off after fielding a routine single in the fourth. He had hit a two-run HR in the top of the inning. Tauchman, 28, is hitting .277 with 13 HRs and 47 RBIs. ... Gleyber Torres and Aaron Judge also hit HRs in Sunday night’s victory as the Yankees set a new franchise single-season record with 268 HRs. They hit 267 last season, which also was an MLB record. The Twins recently broke that mark and now have 275.

Angels:

CF Mike Trout underwent a cryoablation procedure to relieve nerve pain in his right foot. He’s day to day, and manager Brad Ausmus said he expects the two-time AL MVP to be back in the lineup this week. Trout didn’t play in the Angels series opener against the Indians after missing Sunday’s game against the White Sox and pinch-hitting in Saturday’s game. He has been bothered by the toe for a few weeks and missed a game in late August before exiting Friday’s game in the fifth. Entering Monday, Trout was tied with Mets rookie Pete Alonso for the major league lead with 45 HRs.

Nationals:

C Kurt Suzuki is day to day after an MRI on his right elbow revealed just inflammation. Suzuki said before the MRI that he felt tingling in his arm after awkward throw to second base during the seventh inning of Saturday’s loss to the Braves. Either Suzuki or Yan Gomes has started every game at catcher for the NL wild-card-leading Nats. Suzuki, 36, is hitting .260 with 16 HRs and 58 RBIs.

Cubs:

SS Nico Hoerner, the top Cubs prospect and the No. 24 overall pick in the 2018 draft, was called up from Double A because INFs Javier Baez and Addison Russell are out with injuries. Baez has a hairline fracture in his left thumb and will miss the rest of the regular season. He hopes to return if the Cubs make the postseason. Russell is in the concussion protocol after getting hit in the face by a pitch Sunday. Hoerner, 22, is the first player from the 2018 draft class to make it to the majors.
