9/11 events planned for Broward, Palm Beach counties
With the 18th anniversary of 9/ 11 approaching, cities throughout Broward County will have events, including memorial ceremonies, fundraisers and runs, among other commemorations. Here’s your official guide:
Coral Springs: Money raised from registration fees and donations will go toward the Southeast Police Motorcycle Rodeo.

North Lauderdale: On Saturday, there will be a 5K remembrance run starting at 8 a.m. at Hampton Pines Park, 7800 Hampton Blvd. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and there will be free shirts to the first 100 people that register the day of the event. Call 954-724-7061.
Pembroke Pines: On Wednesday, the city will have a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at Memorial Park adjacent to the Charles F. Dodge City Center at 601 City Center Way.
The remembrance ceremony will begin with the presentation of colors by the city’s police and fire departments’ honor guards. The ceremony will include guest speakers, patriotic music featuring local school bands and area musicians. Visit PPines.com or call 954-392-2116.
Pompano Beach: There will be two events — a dedication ceremony in which the city will unveil its newest public art that includes a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, followed by a memorial ceremony later that evening.
The city will announce the dedication of its newest piece of public art, a memorial at Founders Park, 201 NE Third Ave., on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The dedication ceremony is free and open to everyone.
Later that evening, the city’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts department will have a remembrance ceremony at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, 50 W. Atlantic Blvd. at 7 p.m. The ceremony will feature guest speakers, musicians and a performance by the 65-piece Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds Band. Admission is free but space is limited. Sunrise: The city will have a memorial ceremony on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd. The ceremony will feature music, distinguished speakers and the presentation of colors. Call 954-747-4600.
Wilton Manors: On Wednesday, there will be a candlelight service from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Darshan Center for Spiritual Evolution, 1410 NE 26th St. The event will honor victims, first responders, their families, rescue and therapy dogs and will be livestreamed. Call 917-579-3750.
Fort Lauderdale: The Tunnel to Towers Run and Walk will return to Fort Lauderdale for its eighth year this year on Saturday, honoring Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who died on 9/ 11. Participants will run or walk alongside firefighters in full gear starting at Huizenga Park, 32 Las Olas Blvd. at 7:30 a.m. Registration is $35 for adults, $25 for first responders and military personnel, $20 for teens ages 13 to 17 and $10 for children 12 and younger. Boynton Beach: The city of Boynton Beach will have its 9 /11 remembrance ceremony on Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Christ Fellowship, 801 N. Congress Ave., Suite 401 (Boynton Beach Mall).

Wellington: The village of Wellington will have its annual 9/ 11 ceremony at the city’s Patriot Memorial next to Village Hall at 12198 Forest Hill Blvd. on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The village’s memorial includes a steel beam salvaged from the World Trade Center, as well as an eternal flame, fountain and etched glass panels inscribed with the names of the victims. Visit WellingtonFL.gov or call 561-791-4082.
