MIRAMAR – An Everglades High School student has been arrested for having an unloaded handgun in class, Miramar police said.

It was reported about noon Friday when one student witnessed a second student taking the gun out of a bag and handing it to another student on the campus at 17100 SW 48th Ct., investigators said.

The student witness told two school administrators who then informed the school’s resource officer. Two more police officers were called to the school. They went to a classroom and approached the student who had received the gun, according to the arrest report.

Outside the classroom, one officer gave the student a pat-down to see if he had any weapons on him while another officer checked his blue backpack. When asked if he had anything in the backpack, the student said, “a gun,” the report stated.

Inside the backpack, police found a black and green Springfield XD9 pistol with the magazine inserted. There was no ammunition in the magazine or the gun, police said.

The student said he brought the gun to school and intended to return it to its owner when classes were over. He said he would never shoot anyone, investigators said.

The gun was confiscated. The student did not say why he needed a gun and declined to answer any more questions, police said.

The student, whose identity was not released, was booked into the Juvenile Assessment Center and charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
