Of note: Headlined by six of the highest-ranked players in the world, the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio’s 108-player field will compete for a $2 million purse. Nelly Korda, who is ranked No. 3 in the ladies world standings, comes into the event as the top player, followed by Danielle Kang (No. 4), Sei Young Kim (No. 5), Nasa Hataoka (No. 6), Brooke Henderson (No. 8) and Coral Springs native Lexi Thompson (No. 10). In addition to these high-profile players, the inaugural event will also include notable locals Morgan and Madison Pressel (Boca Raton), Jessica Korda (Jupiter) and Jaye Marie Green (Boca Raton). The par-72 Boca Rio Golf Club course features rolling greens with white-sand bunkers. The tournament will be the second event of the 2020 LPGA Tour season and is one of two new stops on the schedule (Pelican Women’s Championship). For the first time since 2008, the LPGA Tour will hold an event in South Florida after the tour decided to remove the event from their schedule. The previous season-ending event was held at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach from 2001 to 2008. The annual event came to end after the tour failed to renew a sponsorship contract with ADT Security Services. With the LPGA back in South Florida, the tour will now have two tournaments held in the state during the month of January. The Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions in Lake Buena Vista was held this past weekend, where Gaby Lopez claimed the trophy after seven playoff holes.
