Broward’s Bosa NFL’s top rookie
St. Thomas Aquinas alum wins award 3 days before Super Bowl
Former St. Thomas Aquinas defensive lineman Nick Bosa has picked up many awards through his burgeoning football career, and he can add a big one to his trophy case.
Bosa, now a standout for the San Francisco 49ers, was named Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year on Thursday.
Bosa lived up to expectations after being the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL draft, racking up 48 tackles, nine sacks, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
“First and foremost, I want to thank the fans for picking me as the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year,” Bosa said in a tweeted video from the Pepsi account. “It’s an extreme honor. I know it’s 100 percent voted on by fans, so thank you, guys. I want to thank my family. It’s been a grueling year, but you guys have helped me every step of the way. Go Niners.”
Bosa and the 49ers will take on
the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl in Miami Gardens on Sunday night.
Bosa first made a name for himself at St. Thomas Aquinas. He was a Sun Sentinel first-team allcounty selection as a sophomore and junior. He was on his way to another all-county selection as a senior before suffering a seasonending knee injury.
Bosa was one of the most touted prospects coming out of St. Thomas. He was ranked a five-star prospect and the No. 8 overall player in the nation in 247Sports’ composite rankings. He signed with Ohio State, where his older brother, Joey, played.
At Ohio State, Bosa had 77 tackles, 29 for a loss, and 17 1⁄2 sacks over three seasons. He was named the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2017.
Bosa was Broward County’s second-highest NFL draft pick ever. South Broward alum Tucker Frederickson was taken by the New York Giants with the first pick in 1965 as a running back out of Auburn.
