Huge day has finally arrived
Underrated local prospects getting ready to announce their college selections
National signing day in 2019 was a showcase for some of the top talent in South Florida.
Three of the top unsigned players in the nation hailed from Broward or Palm Beach County. Benjamin’s Kaiir Elam and Wellington’s Mark-Antony Richards were undecided, and Cardinal Gibbons’ Khris Bogle was about to flip from Alabama to Florida.
This year’s national signing day looks to be less dramatic for local players. Eighteen of the top 20 players in Broward signed early, and seven of the top 10 players in Palm Beach County signed early.
There are extenuating circumstances for the two unsigned players ranked highest in the Sun Sentinel’s preseason rankings, as well.
Chaminade-Madonna defensive lineman Willie Moise, who has been committed to Miami since March 1, 2018, no longer lives in South Florida, according to Chaminade coach Dameon Jones. Palm Beach Gardens defensive lineman Timothy Brown, the No. 4 player in the Palm Beach preseason rankings, was charged with multiple felonies in October.
There are still other talented players who will be signing on Wednesday, though. Here is a look at some of the players who will sign on Wednesday:
Andison Coby, American Heritage Delray, WR
Coby was the Stallions’ leading wide receiver this year. He racked up 884 receiving yards on 56 catches and had seven touchdown receptions. Coby holds offers from Cincinnati, FAU, Syracuse and more, according to Rivals.com. He was a first-team AllCounty pick as a senior.
Chris D’Or, Cardinal Newman, RB
D’Or, the Sun Sentinel Palm Beach County Class 5A-1A offensive player of the year, had a stellar senior year. He rushed for 1,505 yards and 18 touchdowns. D’Or announced on Jan. 22 that he had committed to Slippery Rock University.
Chris Jones, Coconut Creek, DL
Jones, a first-team All-County pick, is rated a three-star prospect in 247Sports’ composite rankings. The site lists him as the No. 48 weak-side defensive end in the 2020 class. Jones had 48 tackles and tied for the team’s lead with 10 sacks. He was previously committed to Kansas but decommitted on Jan. 27. He said Monday that he had made his choice and would sign on Wednesday. He holds offers from FAU, FIU and more.
Joey Kirner, St. Thomas Aquinas, OL
Kirner was an understated part of St. Thomas’ dominant offensive line. A first-team All-County pick, Kirner is rated a three-star prospect in 247Sports’ composite rankings. He committed to Wagner on Monday.
Claude Larkins, Chaminade Madonna, DL
Larkins had 26 tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks in six games. He is rated a three-star prospect and the No. 62 weak-side defensive end in the class. He was previously committed to
Minnesota, but he decommitted and picked N.C. State on Jan. 26.
Dontae Lunan, St. Thomas Aquinas, LB
Lunan, a second-team All-County selection, led a strong Raiders defense with 81 tackles. He had three tackles for loss and forced a fumble. He’s rated a three-star prospect and the No. 156 outside linebacker in the class. He announced on Jan. 27 that he was committed to Bryant.
Benjamin Onwuzo, Chaminade Madonna, DB
Like Larkins, Onwuzo was previously committed to Minnesota. Unlike his teammate, Onwuzo hasn’t announced a new commitment yet. Onwuzo had 31 tackles and two interceptions in eight games. He is rated a three-star prospect and the No. 105 cornerback in the class.
Jamal Potts, American Heritage Delray, DB
Potts had a great season on both sides of the ball. He had 38 tackles and five interceptions as a defensive back, which is his primary position. He also was the Stallions’ No. 2 wide receiver, racking up 623 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Potts was a first-team All-County pick.
Hunter Zambrano, University School, OL
Zambrano, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman, was a second-team All-County pick this year. He is rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports. He announced on Monday that he was committed to Illinois State.
