As far as ’20 odds, Miami a long shot

- By Wells Dusenbury

So, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is Las Vegas doesn’t think highly of the Miami Marlins’ chances this season. The good news is if you’re bullish on the Marlins’ chances, you could earn some serious cash.

With spring training underway, the Marlins have the third-worst odds of winning the World Series, according to the website Sports Betting Dime. At 300-to-1, Miami odds are only above the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles — both 500-to-1. That means you could hypothetically win $300 if you plunk down a buck for Miami to win it all.

The over/under for Marlins’ win total is 64.5, tracking higher than last season’s 57 wins.

The Marlins upgraded their roster, adding Jonathan Villar, Jesus Aguilar and Corey Dickerson, among others. Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA projections has the Marlins finishing 71-91.

The New York Yankees carry the best championship odds at 5-to-1 after signing star pitcher Gerrit Cole to a nineyear, $324 million contract this offseason. The Los Angeles Dodgers (6-to-1), Houston Astros (8-to-1), Atlanta Braves (15-to-1) and Minnesota Twins (18-to-1) are also among the betting favorites. As a result, a Yankees-Dodgers World Series is the most likely match-up, coming in at 9-to-1.

If you’re looking to strike rich with a crazy “So, you’re telling me there’s a chance” bet, a Marlins-Tigers World Series would pay out at 50,000-to-1. So if you drop two dollars on that match-up, you could win $100,000 in the absurdly unlikely reality that comes to fruition.

Despite being awarded a two-year contract extension, Marlins manager Don Mattingly has the fourth-highest odds of being the first skipper to either be fired or resign. SSports Betting DIme thinks White Sox manager Rich Renteria has the hottest seat, giving him 7-to-1 odds of being the first manager ousted.

No Marlins players were on the board for MVP or Cy Young. Former Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich, however, does have the best NL MVP odds at 10-to-1. The Milwaukee Brewers slugger took home the award in 2018 — one year after being traded by Miami.
