NFL awards Dolphins 2 extra picks

Team gets compensatory selections in Rounds 4, 7

The Miami Dolphins bounty of selections in the 2020 NFL draft has officially increased.

The Dolphins gained two selections in next month’s draft from compensatory picks given out by the NFL on Tuesday for the loss of free agents in 2019.

Miami gained a fourth-round selection for losing right tackle Ja’Wuan James, a former first-round pick, to the Denver Broncos, and a seven-round pick for losing pass rusher Cameron Wake to the Tennessee Titans.

The Dolphins own pick No. 141 and pick No. 251 as compensatory selections in the 2020 NFL draft. The selections would have likely been higher if James and Wake hadn’t been sidelined by injuries for most of the 2019 season.

Miami also lost Frank Gore to the Buffalo Bills and Brandon Bolden to the New England Patriots, and signed quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and safety Eric Rowe last offseason. All of those transactions factored into the complicated compensatory pick formula.

The Dolphins have three first-round picks in next month’s draft — No. 5, 18 and 26 — because of the team’s 5-11 record, and trades made with the Houston Texans, who acquired left tackle Laremy Tunsil and receiver Kenny Stills from Miami for a several picks and players, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who acquired safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Dolphins.

The Dolphins also have their own second-round pick (selection No. 39), and New Orleans’ 2020 second-round pick (No. 56) because of a trade down that benefited the Saints in last year’s draft.

The Dolphins have their third-round pick (pick No. 70), and now possess a fourth-round selection (No. 141) courtesy of the compensatory pick. As part of the Fitzpatrick trade, the Dolphins swapped their 2020 fourth-round selection for the Steelers’ 2020 fifth-round pick.

Miami may have regained its 2020 fifth-round pick by trading Kenyan Drake to the Arizona Cardinals late last season. The Cardinals initially had Miami’s selection because of the trade made during last year’s draft that sent quarterback Josh Rosen to Miami for a 2019 second-round pick, and a 2020 fifth-round selection.

The Dolphins have seven picks in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds, but those will be clarified on later in the week because of numerous trades made the past few seasons.

Dolphins acquired a 2020 fifth rounder from the Los Angeles Rams for taking on the contract of veteran cornerback Aqib Talib, who was on injured reserve after fracturing his ribs, at the 2019 trade deadline. Talib never played a snap for the Dolphins and is now a free agent.

Miami acquired Dallas’ sixth-round pick by trading defensive end Robert Quinn and his bloated contract to the Cowboys last offseason. Miami also has a seventh-round pick from the Kansas City Chiefs from a trade made in a trade made in 2018 for defensive back Jordan Lucas.

Miami traded a seventh-rounder to the Minnesota Vikings for offensive guard Danny Isidora last season. The Dolphins also swapped late-round picks with the Indianapolis Colts for offensive lineman Evan Boehm. The compensatory pick added on Tuesday brings Miami’s total of seventh-round selections to two.
