Publix plans to install shields to reduce the rise of spreading the coronavirus, officials say.
See-through plastic shields will be installed at checkout lanes, customer service counters, and pharmacies at all Publix supermarkets as part of the effort to reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus, officials said.
“Installations will begin this weekend, and we expect to conclude within the next two weeks,” Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous confirmed in an email Wednesday.
Publix employees have been asked not to wear medical facemasks or gloves on the job.
The company said it is following the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which said masks and gloves won’t protect healthy people from respiratory illnesses, including the coronavirus.
Publix said gloves are required for employees handling food, such as those who make sub sandwiches.
No South Florida Publix employees have had a confirmed case of COVID-19, company officials said.
If cases do arise, Publix is offering emergency pandemic pay for eligible absences of full-time and part-time employees.
The company has implemented a heightened disinfection program focusing on high-touch surfaces like touch pads, door and drawer handles, phones and computers, officials said.
Publix has also suspended food demonstrations to focus on the health and safety of employees and customers.
Hours have been adjusted from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in all stores to allow for additional preventive sanitation and restocking of product on shelves before reopening the next day.
A senior shopping hour has been designated on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7 a.m. for food and pharmacy needs, officials added.
