Florida reports 46,442 coronaviru­s cases, almost 2,000 deaths

Florida is approachin­g a grim milestone in the coronaviru­s pandemic, reporting close to 2,000 deaths.

The official number from the Department of Health on Monday is 1,997. That represents an increase in 24 deaths over 24 hours.

Florida officials also reported Monday that the state has 46,442 cases of the new coronaviru­s, 854 more than on Sunday. Since the pandemic began, 8,304 people have been treated in Florida hospitals, the state reported, an increase of 74 over the last day. South Florida leads the state in the number of people who have died from coronaviru­s-caused illness. Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties have had 1,122 deaths, seven more than the day before.

State reports show the three counties accounted for 26,654 cases as of Monday, an increase of 229 over the previous 24 hours.

Monday’s Department of Health reports show:

Miami-Dade County, the Florida coronaviru­s hotspot, has had 15,864 cases, an increase of 206 from Sunday. The number of Miami-Dade County deaths, 566, is five more than it was a day earlier. Miami-Dade County, which has 13% of the state’s population, has 34% of the state’s cases and 28% of the deaths.

Broward has had 6,322 cases, 79 more than Sunday. It has had 281 deaths, two more than the day before.

Palm Beach County has had 4,658 cases, 134 more than Sunday. It has had 275 deaths, unchanged from Sunday.

The coronaviru­s death toll in the United States stood at 89,567 on Monday morning, including at least than 38,595 victims in the national hot spot of New York and New Jersey. The country’s total number of cases is almost 1.5 million.

New case, death trends

Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, home to 28.9% of Florida’s population, have had 56.2% of the state’s coronaviru­s deaths and 57.4% of the cases.

The three counties’ shares of the totals have decreased slightly in the past three weeks. On April 27, South Florida had 58.1% of the state’s deaths and 59.5% of the cases.

Florida deaths: The 1,997 deaths the state reported Monday is an increase of 262 from May 11.

In the seven days that ended on May 11, the state reported 336 deaths. In the week that ended on May 4, the state reported 311 deaths. In the week that ended on April 27, there were 299 deaths, and in the week that ended on April 13, there were 319 deaths.

Florida cases: The 46,442 cases

as of Monday is 5,460 higher than on May 11.

In the seven days that ended on May 11, the state reported 4,085 new cases. In the seven days that ended on May 4, the state reported 4,759 new cases. In the week that ended on April 27, there were 5,478 new cases, and in the week that ended on April 13, there were 6,059 new cases.

South Florida deaths: The number of South Florida deaths on Monday, 1,122, is an increase of 136 from a week ago.

In the seven days that ended on May 11, the state reported 204 deaths in South Florida. In the week that ended on May 4, the state reported 150 deaths in South Florida. In the week that ended on April 27, there were 176 South Florida deaths, and in the week that ended on April 13, there were 195 deaths in the region.

South Florida cases: The number of South Florida cases on Monday, 26,654, is 2,716 higher than a week earlier.

In the seven days that ended on May 11, the state reported 2,152 new cases in South Florida. In the week that ended on May 4, the state reported 2,659 new South Florida cases, in the week that ended on April 27, there were 3,420 new South Florida cases, and in the week that ended on April 13, there were 3,670 new cases in the region.

U.S., global view

The Center for Systems Science and Engineerin­g at Johns Hopkins University reported more than 4.7 million cases worldwide. Almost 316,000 people have died.

The United States has 4.3% of the world’s population, 28.4% of the world’s deaths and 31.4% of the world’s cases.
