3-star prospect previously committed to Nebraska

Louisville’s future defensive line will have a South Florida flair.

University School 2021 defensive end R.J. Sorensen committed to the Cardinals on Tuesday morning, announcing his decision on his Twitter account. Sorensen joins Boca Raton defensive end Ashton Gillotte in Louisville’s 2021 class. Gillotte committed Sunday night.

“(I’m looking forward to) competing and working to bring an (Atlantic Coast Conference) championship to Louisville,” Sorensen said.

Sorensen is rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports’ composite ranking. The site lists him as the No. 59 strong-side defensive end and No. 940 payer in the 2021 class. Sorensen was previously committed to Nebraska before decommitting on Jan. 29.

Sorensen chose Louisville over offers from Kentucky, Colorado, and Indiana, among others.

The NCAA has extended a recruiting dead period through June 30, making

recruitment tougher for players, but Sorensen is happy with his choice.

“It has affected every high school athlete’s recruiting, but we adapt and overcome,” he said. “At the end of the day, I found a home for me to continue my growth as a student-athlete.”

Sorensen was an All-County honorable mention in 2019 after notching 50 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and four forced fumbles as a junior.

The Sharks defensive lineman said he liked how he fit into Louisville’s defense.

“After sitting down on a Zoom call with coach (Mark) Ivey, I really like his scheme and how I see my development in that scheme,” Sorensen said.

Louisville has had success recruiting South Florida. Since signing Heisman Trophy winner and NFL MVP Lamar Jackson out of Boynton Beach in 2015, the Cardinals have signed several South Florida standouts, including Atlantic’s Henry Bryant III, American Heritage’s Dorian Jones, Palm Beach Central’s Renato Brown, St. Thomas Aquinas’ Trenell Troutman and Benjamin’s Jordan Travis, among others.

“It’s exciting to join Florida guys up there and establish a pipeline,” Sorensen said.
