Ex-Hurricane joins Browns front office

Former UM linebacker Glenn Cook named VP of player personnel

- By David Furones

Former Miami Hurricanes linebacker Glenn Cook will assume the role of vice president of player personnel for the Cleveland Browns, a source confirmed to the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Friday. The role was previously held by former UM great Alonzo Highsmith.

Cook was promoted from his position as Cleveland’s assistant director of pro scouting, where he spent the past four seasons. As VP of player personnel, he’ll oversee the Browns’ pro and college scouting departments, as first reported by Bleacher Report.

Cook spent six seasons at Miami from 2003-08. As a sixth-year senior, he led the Hurricanes with 76 tackles, starting all 13 games at middle linebacker. Cook redshirted as a freshman out of Chaminade-Madonna in 2003 and also added another final year of eligibility, when he missed the entire 2007 season due to a foot injury suffered on the second day of training camp. He played 47 games in his UM career, starting 27.

Cook also was a 46th-round MLB draft pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2009.

Before joining the Browns, Cook was a pro scout with the Green Bay Packers from 2012-15. He was a scouting assistant in 2011 with the Indianapolis Colts.

The promotion of Cook in

Cleveland comes as new Browns general manager Andrew Berry shapes his staff since taking over for John Dorsey. Highsmith and the Browns parted ways earlier in the offseason.

After Highsmith and the Hurricanes were in talks over the football program’s chief of staff role, which went to Hall of Fame safety and Miami alum Ed Reed, Highsmith has been working as a consultant with the Seattle Seahawks.

Along with Cook and Highsmith as ex-Hurricanes serving as NFL executives, former UM linebacker Dan Morgan is the Buffalo Bills’ director of player personnel.
