Cowell injures back testing bicycle

Simon Cowell broke his back Saturday while testing his new electric bicycle at his home in California.

Cowell was expected to have surgery Saturday evening, according to a spokespers­on for the entertainm­ent mogul. Cowell fell off the bike while in the courtyard with his family at his house in Malibu.

He was taken to a hospital and was said to be under observatio­n and doing fine.

Cowell created “America’s Got Talent” and serves as a judge on the show. He has also been the judge on “Britain’s Got Talent,”

“The X Factor” and “American Idol.”

Soria, president of Golden Globes group,

dies: Lorenzo Soria, 68, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Associatio­n and former editor of the Italian news weekly L’Espresso, died Friday, the associatio­n said.

Soria died peacefully at his Los Angeles home, the associatio­n said in a statement, lauding his “generosity, passion” and sense of humor.

“He was deeply committed to the movie industry’s power to heal the world and shine a spotlight on injustice,” said the group that awards the annual Golden Globes.

The Argentinia­n-born Soria grew up and worked in Italy for L’Espresso before becoming a Los Angeles resident in 1982.

A member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Associatio­n since 1989, he was in the administra­tion for more than 25 years. After serving twice before as president, his current tenure began in 2019.

Italy’s pioneering comic

actor Valeri dies: Franca Valeri, 100, an elegant, ironic and versatile actor who pioneered female comic roles in Italy’s postwar years and helped the nation laugh at its foibles, has died.

The Corriere della Sera newspaper quoted her daughter, Stefania Bonfadelli, as saying that Valeri died in her sleep at her home in Rome on Sunday.

President Sergio Mattarella praised Valeri as a “versatile and popular actress who will remain in the hearts of Italians for her great talent and her extraordin­ary likability.”

Madonna working on a

screenplay: Madonna has revealed that she is working on a screenplay with Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody.

The pop star announced the news in a short video posted to her Instagram on Friday with the caption,

“When you’re stuck in a house with multiple injuries what do you do? Write a screenplay with Diablo Cody about...?” Madonna followed this statement with emojis indicating that the project could be music-related.

The video shows Madonna and Cody working together. Madonna even describes her iconic Jean Paul Gaultier conebra costume from the 1990 “Blond Ambition” tour, leading fans to theorize they are writing a biopic of Madonna’s career.
