Woman charged in deadly road rampage, double hit and run

- By Wayne K. Roustan

A driver went on a wild, miles-long road rampage, striking several cars and killing a pedestrian, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. More than three months later, the driver is now facing charges that include vehicular homicide and drunk driving.

It began when police received a call at 8:15 p.m. May 17 reporting a possibly impaired driver in a 2019 red

Jeep Wrangler going east on Southern Boulevard near Forest Hill Boulevard. The caller was following the Jeep until he lost it at a red light.

Yesenia Marie Sobrino, 30, of West Palm Beach, was at the wheel of the Jeep when it T-boned the driver’s side of a car at Haverhill and Belvedere roads about 8:25 p.m. Sobrino got out, looked at the damage, got back in the Jeep, and drove off, according to her arrest report.

Sobrino was speeding in the 3200 block of Summit Boulevard when she jumped the curb about 8:37 p.m. and drove about 100 feet along the sidewalk before hitting pedestrian Stephanie Wright, 33, of West Palm Beach. The critically injured Wright was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where she died in surgery about 10:39 p.m., the report stated.

Sobrino kept driving. Several deputies found and followed the Jeep about 8:48 p.m. and a patrol car pulled up behind her at a red light. She started to back up toward the patrol car until the light turned green and then she drove off again, investigators said.

During the low speed pursuit, the hood of the Jeep popped open and smashed the windshield blocking Sobrino’s view of the road but she kept going. The hood latches had been damaged when the Jeep hit Wright, officials said.

Sobrino was allegedly swerving through several lanes and into oncoming traffic at one point before turning onto Forest Hill Boulevard, veering off the road and hitting two vehicles parked in a driveway.

Deputies got Sobrino out of the Jeep at 8:51 p.m. and reported a strong odor of alcohol on her and in the Jeep. During questioning, she did not know the time and could not remember the route she drove but said she had just dropped off her children in Loxahatchee, the report stated.

Toxicology tests revealed she had a blood alcohol level of 0.17, more than twice the legal limit of .08, and she had cannabis in her system, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Crime Lab.

She was charged Thursday with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a crash with death and damage to property, fleeing and eluding law enforcement and drug possession.
