■ MLB: An umpire tested positive for the coronavirus, prompting a late shift in crew assignments in Florida this week, The AP reported. The affected umpire, who wasn’t identified, wasn’t on the field when the result was learned. MLB medical experts didn’t believe the positive test represented a threat of infection or presented a risk to other personnel. The Nationals-Rays game at Tropicana Field began Tuesday night with only three umpires. Fill-in Clint Vondrak came on the field in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, veteran ump Andy Fletcher, who had been scheduled to work the Nats-Rays game, instead traveled to Miami and joined three young umpires as the crew chief for the Red Sox-Marlins game.

■ Cardinals: MLB suspended manager Mike Shildt one game for his role in a bench-clearing fracas in Milwaukee, and was set to miss the nightcap of the Cardinals’ doubleheader against the Brewers. Shildt was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount “for actions that contributed to inciting the benches-clearing incident” in the fifth inning of an 18-3 loss to the Brewres on Tuesday night. Shildt and Brewers manager Craig Counsell were ejected, soon after Brewers star Ryan Braun was awarded first base on a rare catcher’s interference call against Yadier Molina. Shildt came off the bench to examine Molina’s left arm, then he and the AllStar catcher approached the the Brewers dugout and exchanged words with Brewers players. Players from both teams’ dugouts and bullpens massed in front of the the Brewers bench.

■ Yankees: All-Star OF Aaron Judge was activated and batted second against the Blue Jays on Wednesday night, giving the Yankees a full stable of active regulars for the first time since Aug. 8. The Yankees also announced that it was transferring LHP James Paxton to the 45-day IL, ending his season. Judge has been out since Aug. 26 after aggravating a strained right calf and landing on the IL for the second time this season. Judge initially went on the IL on Aug. 14, returned for one game and promptly was put back on the shelf. Judge was batting .292 with nine HRs, 20 RBIs and a 1.081 OPS in 18 games this season. Paxton, 31, hasn’t pitched since Aug. 20, and the Yankees had been hoping he could recover from a strained left flexor tendon in his pitching arm. Paxton finished the season 1-1 with a 6.64 ERA in five starts. He can become a free agent after the season. The Yankees activated DH Giancarlo Stanton on Tuesday. 2B DJ LeMahieu, SS Gleyber Torres and 3B Gio Urshela also have done IL stints this season, but have since returned.

■ Nationals: Rookie Luis Garcia hit a two-run HR in the 10th and the Nationals beat the AL East-leading Rays 4-2. With Carter Kieboom on second base to start extra innings, the 20year-old García hit a leadoff drive on the first pitch from Nick Anderson (1-1). Brandon Lowe got the Rays even at 2 when he hit a solo homer off Daniel Hudson (2-2) on a 2-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth.
