Father of NFL running back James White dies when car is smashed at Broward intersection.
Car plowed into side of vehicle at intersection; mom seriously injured
The parents of NFL running back James White were in the middle of a Broward County intersection Sunday afternoon when a driver with a history of speeding plowed into the side of the vehicle, killing Tyrone White, a MiamiDade police captain.
Tyrone White’s wife, Lisa White, suffered life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened around 1 p.m. in at the intersection of Griffin Road and 118th Avenue in Cooper City. Daniel Chamberlin was driving a 2018 Subaru east on Griffin Road when he hit the passenger side of the Whites’ 2014 Volkswagon Passat, as Lisa White was making the left-hand turn, according to a police report. The impact caused the Passat to strike a curb and then flip, trapping the
Whites inside.
The intersection has a traffic signal. Police on Monday were still investigating who may have been at fault and who had the right of way.
As witnesses tried to help the motorists, Chamberlin’s car caught fire. Chamberlin did not suffer life threatening injuries. Lisa White was taken by air ambulance to Memorial Regional Hospital. Tyrone White was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chamberlin, 32, has a long history of driving violations. He was stopped for excessive speed on the interstate twice within a month when he was just 16, and he continued to speed as he got older. Records show he has cited seven times for speeding and one time for careless driving in 2018. Some of the speeding cases were dismissed.
It was unclear Monday whether speed, alcohol or drugs played a part in the crash. The matter is still under investigation.
James White was scheduled to play with the New England Patriots on Sunday night against the Seattle Seahawks but was inactive.
Tyrone White, 59, had been in law enforcement since 1984. He played college football at Florida A&M University and became the school newspaper’s sports editor, according to a 2019 ESPN profile of James White.
James White was born in Fort Lauderdale and attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School, where he was a standout in the talent-laden football program under legendary coach George Smith. He went on to play college football at the University of Wisconsin.
The Patriots selected James White in the fourth round of the 2014 draft, and he has won three Super Bowls while on the team, catching a Super Bowl-record 14 passes against the Atlanta Falcons in the 2017 title game. He is one of 30 Aquinas grads to have been drafted into the NFL.
